LIFETIME
OF CHANGE IN 13 That's the view of George Iacobescu, CEO of Canary Wharf Group plc, writing in the Forward of the 2001/02 edition of Docklands and London East Business Directory, circulated to 2,500 local businesses. The regeneration and continued success of the Docklands area has been one of the best documented and most admired success stories of the past 20 years, says the Canary chief. "Docklands continues to go from strength to strength, with growing employment, more shops and amenities and a growing resident population. "Today 35,000 people work at Canary Wharf and ultimately, up to 100,000 people could work here, many of them from East London. Between 1997 and 1999, the number of people working on the estate from the Thames Gateway area increased from 20.3 percent to 30.3 percent (or 5,000 to 8,000) and this momentum will continue. "So much has changed in this area since we started developing Canary Wharf in 1987 - a lifetime of change in only 13 years", says George Iacobescu. He stresses that London Docklands is "much more" than Canary Wharf which is acknowledged as a success. ExCeL has been praised throughout the exhibition world as being at the leading edge and London City Airport was recently voted the best business airport in the UK.
