The riverside village that time forgot has been transformed into a thriving residential area as a succession of riverside warehouses have been converted into exciting homes for executives working in the nearby City and Docklands business districts. Cobbled streets, ancient pubs and leafy squares knit together a residential community that now includes private estates, some new-build - others converted from factories, that traditionally supplied the shipbuilding and river trades. St Katharine Docks were the first to be regenerated and have become a focal point for tourists drawn by the Tower of London, Tower Bridge and other attractions. Oriental carpets, spirits, port and sherry, tobacco, opium and furs were among the treasures stored in the vaulted warehouses that were ventilated to maintain a temperature of 60 degrees Farrenheit, important for the maturing of wines and spirits. The boat-filled yacht haven is the centre of a trading and leisure location that includes the four star riverside Tower Hotel, fine restaurants, a supermarket and specialist shops. Limehouse Basin marina has river boats and narrow boats that can cruise Britain's canal network and Shadwell Basin has watersports and homes on its banks. Nearly 2,500 new homes have been built on Docks land and huge commercial buildings house banks, trading institutions and News International, publishers of the Times and Sunday Times. Hawksmoor churches and other historic buildings have been restored, producing a unique blend of history, leisure and stylish living in a compact 180 hectares of successful regeneration. |
